Session Title: “What in the World are Libraries Doing in Virtual Worlds?”
Session Speakers: Kitty Pope and Lori Bell
Kitty Pope and Lori Bell will provide an overview of virtual worlds, what libraries are doing in them, and why we need to be in virtual worlds.
Kitty Pope is the Executive Director of the Alliance Library System in East Peoria, Illinois. Under her leadership, the Alliance Virtual Library became the first maintained library in the virtual world of Second Life. Kitty has worked in libraries in Canada, the U.S., and the Middle East and has managed a number of successful innovative projects.
Lori Bell is Director of Innovation at the Alliance Library System and project manager for the Alliance Virtual Library and its partnership islands in Second Life.
Session Time: 10:00 am Pacific – 10:45 am Pacific (see various time zones) Session Title: “The Alliance Virtual Library Project in Second Life” Session Speaker: Rhonda Trueman Rhonda will discuss the two year project of the Alliance Virtual Library in Second Life. Rhonda Trueman (aka Abbey Zenith on Second Life) is Head of Reference for Johnson & Wales University's Charlotte Library. She is a member of ALA and ACRL, serving as current chair for the ACRL Second Life Task Force. Rhonda has been with Alliance Virtual Library from its initial presence in Second Life and now serves as Director of Library Resources and Services, managing the AVL library islands of Info Island, Info Island International, Infotainment, Imagination, and Illumination.
Session Time: 12:00 pm Pacific – 1:30 pm Pacific (see various time zones) Session Title: “Virtual Worlds - A Panel Discussion” Panelists: Barbara Galik (Puglet Dancer), of Bradley University and Elven Institute Marty Grover (Fleet Goldenberg), President and Creative director of Squirrelverse Christy Confetti Higgins (Violet Portola), Digital Library Program Lead / Information Management & Communications at Sun Microsystems Joe Sanchez (North Lamar), Virtual World Researcher, Doctoral Candidate and Assistant Instructor School of Information, University of Texas at Austin Join us for a panel discussion on virtual worlds. We'll be bringing together conference speakers and a few special guests to have a more in depth discussion on virtual worlds and librarianship. Questions from the audience are encouraged.
Session Time: 2:00 pm Pacific – 2:45 pm Pacific (various time zones) Session Title: "Teaching in Virtual Worlds: A Report from the Trenches" Session Speaker: Joe Sanchez Picking up where the discussion at ALA left off, Joe Sanchez, will talk about librarianship in virtual worlds. Joe Sanchez, M.S. is completing his doctoral work in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin with research focusing on Shared Virtual Environments (SVE), Learning 2.0, Social Informatics, and instructional technology. He has presented research about the use and development of instructional technology at Educause, Ed-Media, SITE, Syllabus, TXDLA, and IOL. His recent work includes a qualitative assessment of the Second Life user experience for a World Literature course at the University of Texas at Austin.
