Session Title: "From 7 to 700 - Scaling graduate LIS instruction in virtual environments"
Session Speaker: Jeremy Kemp
Overview: San Jose State University is the nation's largest accredited graduate School of Library and Information Science and also a front runner in using 3D virtual environments for instruction. The school launched its Second Life campus in Spring of 2007 and is now requiring the incoming Fall class to
demonstrate mastery in this area. This is an informal view of the instructional design process currently underway and also the steps that led to this innovation.
Jeremy W. Kemp is an instructional designer at San José State University and started teaching online in 1999. He keeps the official wiki for educators using the Second Life immersive environment — www.simteach.com. His instructional technology project connecting Moodle and Second Life has attracted hundreds of participants from around the world — www.sloodle.com. Kemp has master's degrees from Stanford and Northwestern University and has been awarded "Picture of the Day" three times on Wikipedia.

Session Time: 11:00 am Pacific – 11:45 am Pacific (various time zones) Session Title: “Academic Libraries and Virtual Worlds” Session Speaker: Robin Ashford Robin will discuss ways in which academic librarians can serve their communities in virtual worlds. Robin Ashford is the Reference & Distance Services Librarian at the Portland Center of George Fox University (GFU) in Portland, Oregon, USA and works primarily with students in graduate and doctoral programs. She earned her MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Dec. 2003. Robin joined Second Life in 2006 and last May she began volunteering on the Information Island International Reference Desk. This past summer Robin set up an office building with resources on a skydeck and assisted a GFU professor in the Educational Foundations and Leadership (EDFL) Program with teaching his first class of students in SL. Recently, Robin completed a course from the Boise State University MS in Educational Technology program titled "Teaching and Learning in Second Life."
Session Time: 12:00 pm Pacific – 12:45 pm Pacific (various time zones) Session Title: “Building a Library Presence in the Virtual World of Second Life” Session Speaker: Sonja Plummer Morgan Sonja will discuss the basics of building a library presence in Second Life. Sonja Plummer-Morgan is a public library director in Northern Maine, VP/President Elect of the Maine Library Association, board member for the Association for Rural & Small Libraries, and serves on the ALA's University Press Committee. She graduated from the University of Maine at August with a Bachelor's of Science in Library and Information Technology and on full scholarship, graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Master's in Library Science. Sonja was a public library director in Moab Utah, in a school library, and worked as a children's librarian. Sonja manages Cybrary City, an island in Second Life for new libraries; she also manages the Readers Garden which has bimonthly book discussions.
Session Time: 1:00 pm Pacific – 1:45 pm Pacific (various time zones) Session Title: “Creating Educational Tools in Second Life for Libraries” Session Speaker: Matt Krull Matt will talk about the educational tools he has developed for teaching and libraries in Second Life. With just over 18 years of work in the entertainment & production Industry, Matt Krull has developed a unique perspective and ability to imagine and implement fun and interesting projects based on available resources. He has developed a small, but growing, number of exciting yet simple to implement technologies in SL which allow educators to present their students with materials pertinent to their studies. Second Life is a place where the imagination can blossom & thrive. Primarily a visually immersive tool for education., he believes a number of other teaching methodologies can be applied.
